What Is My IP and What Does It Reveal?

Every device connected to the internet uses an IP address to communicate with online services. Your public IP address is the address websites can see when you connect to them.

What does an IP address reveal?

An IP address can provide information about your internet connection, such as your approximate location, internet service provider, and network. It usually does not reveal your exact home address by itself.

However, an IP address can still provide useful information to websites, advertisers, network operators, and other online services. What they can learn depends on the IP address and the databases they use.

Does a VPN hide my IP address?

A VPN can replace your normal public IP address with the IP address of the VPN server. Websites will then generally see the VPN server rather than your normal public IP.

What this tool does not tell you

Your IP address alone cannot provide a complete picture of your online privacy. It does not tell you whether your browser has a WebRTC leak, whether your DNS requests are using your VPN, or whether websites can identify you through other tracking methods.

Think of this tool as a quick check of your public internet identity, rather than a complete privacy test.
