What Is a WebRTC Leak Test?
WebRTC is a browser technology that supports real time communication, including voice and video applications. As part of establishing these connections, browsers can gather ICE candidates containing network connection information.
In some situations, this information can expose an IP address that you did not expect a website to see. Our WebRTC Leak Test checks the information your browser makes available during the test.
Why does WebRTC matter when using a VPN?
A VPN changes the public IP address normally visible to websites. However, a browser can handle WebRTC connections separately from a VPN tunnel. Depending on the browser, VPN, and network configuration, WebRTC may expose additional network information.
How does this test work?
The test creates a WebRTC connection in your browser and examines the ICE candidates generated during the process. These candidates can contain IP address information used to establish the connection.
WebRTC candidates can represent different connection types, including host, server reflexive, peer reflexive, and relay candidates.
What does a detected IP mean?
Finding an IP address does not automatically prove that your VPN has failed. Browsers and VPN applications handle WebRTC differently, and some addresses may be private or otherwise unrelated to your public VPN address.
The test should therefore be treated as a diagnostic. Compare the addresses it detects with the public IP shown when your VPN is connected.
What this test does not check
A WebRTC test does not test every part of your VPN connection. It does not verify DNS routing, encryption quality, VPN server security, or whether your VPN provider keeps logs.
